Here are the top four ways to show up for avalanche safety

Observations

Share what you experienced in the backcountry

Field observations—the lifeblood of any center—help validate predicted avalanche activity, alert forecasters to snowpack and weather variations, and ultimately enable forecasters to provide accurate descriptions of avalanche hazards. They are especially valuable in the Flathead because the topography and weather (those clouds!) often obscure start views of start zones and avalanche paths. We offer a heartfelt thank-you to everyone taking the time to share at the end the day. Your time and thoughtfulness are deeply appreciated not just by FAC staff but the whole community.

We get by with a little help from our friends

Your contribution allows us to provide a free daily avalanche advisory, free community outreach, free youth education, and affordable adult education. Are you an individual? The best way to support is by directly donating. Are you a business owner? Corporate sponsorship is a powerful way to align your brand with snow safety and invest in avalanche safety. Together, donors and corporate sponsors make magic happen—this is an all-hands-on-deck effort.

Events

Make connections and build community

We believe that a more connected avalanche community is more informed and more resilient. Every year, we organize three major events to bring folks together. In September, we kick off the season with the Flow to Snow Party around the fall equinox. The Northern Rockies Snow & Avalanche workshop, the second weekend of November, is an early-season opportunity to learn about avalanche research and other topics related to mountain experience. Mid-season, we throw the Flathead Avalanche Friends Fest, a week of get-togethers and educational moments. Join us!

Join a FOFAC committee or the Board of Directors

This is the best way to roll up your sleeves and contribute to our mission! Our NRSAW, Education, and Braap committees are open to the public. We invite you to join a committee in an area where you have expertise and/or interest. Email emily@flatheadavalanche.org for details. The FOFAC Board of Directors is a volunteer group that meets every other month. We are specifically seeking board members with legal or development experience. Email friends@flatheadavalanche.org for more information.
