We encountered surprising and unnerving persistent slab instabilities today in the Middle Fork, demanding extra cautious terrain selection.
Start zone ranged from 32-34 across most of slope, with a few features up to 39 degrees.
Failure date/time estimated. There was about 4" to 6" of new snow on the bed surface and debris. Slides were larger than expected because the moving debris gouged down through isothermal wet snow at lower elevations.
Numerous 2" to 4" natural soft slabs ran during the storm. Almost all very small, D1. One entrained enough snow to become a D1.5.
