Flathead Avalanche Center 2021/2022 Forecaster Internship

The Flathead Avalanche Center is looking for one or more interns for the coming winter. Below is an outline of how we envision the program will work. If you're interested, please review the application guidelines and send us your best stuff!

Expectations:

Training: Available for 1-2 days of staff training in early December. May be virtual or field-based.

Fieldwork: Available for 2 field days/ week for 4 weeks (Jan, Feb, or March). Assist forecasters with conducting and publishing observations. That may include shooting and editing video and still images and entering data on the website.

Forecasting: Write a weekly snowpack summary every Friday for 4 weeks that will be published as an observation on the FAC website.

Education: Assist with teaching one avalanche education class during the 4-week period. That may involve classroom or field sessions, depending on the schedule.

Research: FAC staff have several ongoing studies. Interns could help with these if interested.

These expectations are a minimum. Interested interns may dedicate more time to the avalanche center depending on interest and availability. We're looking for people with solid field and communication skills who are building experience for professional snow work.

Application: Please read and adhere to the below requirements. We receive numerous applications and selection for these positions is competitive.

  1. A cover letter summarizing your avalanche-related experience, goals, and availability.
  2. A resume listing your outdoor work and recreation experience, especially time in avalanche terrain. Please include any avalanche and first aid training, as well as anything else that might make you an invaluable field partner.
